All 9 episodes aired in the US first on Sundance, but filmed in Germany all in German with English subtitles.
It finally aired in Germany last year, but only 2 episodes made air time due to low ratings.
My German work counterparts watched the whole series on Netflix.
Roger is spot on, plenty of Trabis

Out of whats on offer..The white ribbon is very good but very dark...I mean..VERY dark. It is set in Northern Germany and as you have asked for recommendations not solely East German, how about Tin Drum by Gunter Grass, another shot in the north so I was told ( Lubeck).
From the German war genre ..Come and see & Europa Europa......The Sophie Scholl story of the White Rose movement (it's available on your rental) is a must
I can guarantee...not a single Trabant in sight in any of them.

I am surprised nobody has mentioned Everything is illuminated. It's an US film, set in Ukraine and starring Elijah Wood (and Sammy Davis Jnr Jnr the drivers seeing eye bitch!)
Great scene when a little kid lets the tyres down on the trabi they are travelling in. The soundtrack is brilliant.

    It's premium!
