This black plastic or bakelite disc is glued to the package shelf right in the center. A couple people on here have mentioned that people would keep a roll of TP back there decorated with a crocheted cover. But I'll be darned if I can figure how this disc would facilitate that. It is about the size of a roll of TP, but wouldn't hold it or anything. 20130817_162302 (800x600).jpg Does anybody have any ideas what purpose this might have? Otherwise I am sticking with the TP roll thing, even though I don't quite get it.

Maybe it used to hold something else? The way the holes are would indicate that

I agree Justin, that pattern looks intended for something. But what could it possibly be? I can't imagine anything that would require that sort of framework. I am inclined now to think that it is some sort of piece of something completely unrelated that the owner stuck in there to do something simple and the holes are irrelevant. Unless somebody recognizes it someday.

Well we can hope and see....If we can't figure it out, you can always re-purpose it for something else?

One benefit already: after I posted this pic I was motivated to clean and shine the package shelf area. I never noticed all the scuffs and dullness!

It appears to be a combination toilet paper roll cover base and mini flag holder!
I think maybe they were called "Ein toilettepappenrolleundflaggenhalterfürhinterbleche"
As this rare accessory was always in short supply in the west, a strong black market for them developed which ultimately lead to the construction of the Berlin Wall.

The crocheted TP cover is a German thing. Part of the German psyche is to always be prepared, and a crocheted cover keeps the TP rolled up, clean and tidy and ready for duty.

Even though we Viking Barbarians have little use for Emergency TP, I keep one on the parcel shelf of Comrade Trabi for traditions sake. It does slide around a lot as we evade the Bourgeois Goon Squads, so the mount is a great accessory for the TP cover accessory.

And, as a bonus, this one was made to hold several flags on display!
The vital importance of having many Fine Socialist Flags on display was obviously not lost on the maker.

OK, I realize this thread may be of limited interest but it sort of intrigues me. I looked in my spares and the car actually came with another one of these myster discs. It is a solid piece of plastic or resin material and it appears to have been turned or ground to shape rather than molded. The small holes are threaded as you see there are screws mysteriously in this one, and the threaded holes go all the way through the object. The large center hole, however, which is smooth, takes a 90 degree turn inside the disc and comes out the side! It just looks so purposeful but I am without a clue. Base for a toilet paper cover is all I can imagine it doing. 20130821_164601 (800x600).jpg

I think it is a pedestal for a 3rd break light. In 1984, while I was in Hamburg, my mom sent me some stuff wrapped in newspaper. One article in that newspaper said that in 1986 USA car makers would have to include a 3rd break light. I told people and they laughed me out of town. It happened of course. Maybe your car had an owner who thought it was a good idea until they sold it or never finished installing it. What do you think of that prediction, guess, or idea?

You could be very right about that. my Trabi also had a 3rd brakelight, but it was broken, so after a few km of driving it was just hanging in the wire, and since it is not a demand here unless the car is born with it i removed it. :)

It is so here also, we don't have to retrofit to meet current standards, thank the gods, what would that look like if we had to?

3rd stoplight is not required, but sideblinkers are here.

Logic suggests that 3rd brake light, called a "High level " brake light would be correct. However, it could have been intended for something completly different by whoever fitted it.
Toilet Roll Holder??? - Someone MUST be joking!! Amusing gag though.

That toilet paper thing was part of another thread which many people participated in regarding Trabant accessories and is quite real actually.

Behold, ein Mützchen für Toilettenpapierrolle! (The famous Toilet Paper Roll thing)

    IMG_0722a.jpg

Unsecured, it tends to shift around at high speed so lacking the Toilettpappenrolle Halter accessory mentioned above, I have it wedged between bits of propaganda.

LOL, I do have that perplexing issue of the roll ending up in all the wrong places. Did you see mine. A person made it for me with only a description so they made a stocking cap, no brim, so it is all over the place. Not sure it would stay put even with a brim at those high G turns I make.

I actually got a reply from the man who sold me the car (which had belonged to his father-in-law) and he said it was for a third brake light. A couple of you guessed that, so you each get a cigar.
